Womens washington wizards roster12/7/2023 ![]() Washington converted the extra financial wiggle room and a few more second-round picks into Dinwiddie, who should fill the point-guard playmaking role for half as much. Harrell is an expiring contract and Caldwell-Pope’s lightly guaranteed 2022-23 season acts as one, while Westbrook was owed $92 million over the next two seasons. In summary, that parlay cost them a few second-rounders and a future first but removes the contractual handcuffs that prevented them from building the team. The Westbrook trade doesn’t necessarily improve the team’s immediate prospects, but it’s an amazing two-step getaway from the dead money they owed to Wall. Did not re-sign SF Garrison Mathews, C Alex Len, C Robin Lopez, SF Isaac Bonga or PG Ish Smith.Re-signed PG Cassius Winston to a two-way. ![]() Re-signed PG Raul Neto (one year, minimum).Traded three second-round picks and SF Chandler Hutchison for PG Spencer Dinwiddie (sign-and-trade, three years, $54 million plus incentives, partially guaranteed third year).Drafted SF Corey Kispert (15th) and PF Isiah Todd (31st).Traded 22nd pick to Indiana for 31st pick and PG Aaron Holiday.Traded Russell Westbrook and three future seconds to the Lakers for C Montrezl Harrell, SF Kyle Kuzma and SG Kentavious Caldwell-Pope and 22nd pick.Replaced head coach Scott Brooks with Wes Unseld Jr.It was short and sweet, with two huge bangers and little else. Finding consistent threats from distance should be a major objective for Washington this coming season. Despite having two awesome shooters in Beal and Bertans, the Wizards were last in the league in 3-point attempts per 100 and shot only 35.1 percent from beyond the arc. Most notably the 3-point line was a problem. Statistically, the Wizards were as good at drawing fouls as they were bad at conceding them (this team played some long games) but otherwise failed to stand out. The Wizards leaned heavily on vets Robin Lopez and Raul Neto, who produced fine seasons relative to expectations but aren’t going to prop up an offense. Sharpshooter Davis Bertans struggled, while youngsters Deni Avdija, Rui Hachimura and Garrison Mathews failed to produce much in heavy minutes. A team helmed by Westbrook and Bradley Beal should be able to land in the top half of the league with ease a lack of a third option or a credible supporting cast did Washington in. If Washington surprised defensively, the offense was a bit of a letdown. They also were among the league’s best teams at taking away the 3-point line. The Wizards still fouled way too much but had a great deal more rim protection and improved on the defensive glass. Washington ranked 30th a year earlier but finished the 2020-21 season a quasi-respectable 19th. Perhaps the most amazing part was that the Wizards were OK on defense.
